Setting up a Sky remote to control the TV On/Off, Volume and Mute can be a bit of a trial and the instructions seem to differ depending on where on the internet you find them. Even Sky’s own website is not totally clear on the subject and if you can’t find a code that works what do you do next?
The instructions below set out to clarify everything and also to show you how you can control your surround sound system as well.
3 digit or 4 digit codes
Searching on the internet may reveal both 3 & 4 digit codes. Most instructions seem to be for one or the other but don’t explain te subtle difference between the two.
Setting up for TV
Search the internet for the codes for your model of TV
TV should be on and not in standby mode
- On the Sky remote press TV
- Press and hold Select and Red button until the red light flashes twice
- For 3 digit code enter the code using the 0-9 digit keys then press Select to finish entry. If red light flashes twice press Standby.
- For 4 digit code enter the code using the 0-9 digit keys. If red light flashes twice press Standby.
- If TV switches off press Select to save. If not repeat from 2.
- Press Standby again to switch TV back on then try using up/down Volume buttons and Mute button. If they function correctly write down the code on the label in the battery compartment. If not repeat from 2.
If remote code not found
This next procedure can take a while as it works through all the codes contained in the Sky remote’s database of codes until the correct one is found (hopefully)
TV should be on and not in standby mode
- On the Sky remote press TV
- Press and hold Select and Red button until the red light flashes twice
- Press TV then Standby
- If the TV switches off press Select to save else repeat from 3.
If it worked then to find the code for safekeeping do the following
- On the Sky remote press TV
- Press and hold Select and Red button until the red light flashes twice
- Using the digits enter 990. The red light should flash twice
- Press 1 and count the flashes of the red light (no flashes = 0 in all cases)
- Press 2 and count the flashes of the red light
- Press 3 and count the flashes of the red light
- Press 4 and count the flashes of the red light
Write down the code on the label in the battery compartment.
Controlling your sound system with your Sky remote
If like many people today you don’t use your TVs speakers but use instead a soundbar or surround sound system connected via a coaxial or optical audio connector you may be able to control the device with your Sky remote. The keys used after successful setup are as follows
- Press TV then
- Left arrow controls on/off
- Up/down arrows control volume
- Right arrow controls Mute on/off
- Pressing Sky button returns arrow keys to Sky box
Here’s how to set it up (assuming you can find the correct code)
- Turn on your sound system
- On the Sky remote press TV
- Press and hold Select and 0 until the red light flashes twice
- Enter 4 digit code and press Left Arrow
- If sound system turns off press Select to save else repeat from 3.
- Press TV then Left Arrow to turn on sound system and check other arrow buttons for correct functioning.
- Don’t forget to press Sky button to return arrow buttons to normal function
I’ve not tried TV then Left arrow repeatedly to find an unknown code.
To enable Sound system to be controlled by up/down volume buttons and mute button use Select and 1 instead of 0. TV volume will then use arrow buttons instead.
To undo settings for Select and 0 or Select and 1 Press TV then hold down Select and 2 until the red light flashes twice
To reset remote completely Press TV then hold down Select and Blue button until red light flashes twice
